Newsletter 14.2.25

Co-op Academy New Islington Newsletter Friday 14th February 2025
Mr Berry's Message.
Dear Parents/Carers,
It has been an incredibly busy half term here at New Islington. Before we break up for a week I would like to give a special mention to how proud we are of how the children have represented their community throughout the half term during off site visits, through speaking to visitors looking at the school and through competitions ranging from sport to business enterprise to spelling bees.
We hope you all enjoy the week away from school and return ready for more learning on the 24th!
Thank you for your continued support,
Mr Berry
Extreme Reading Challenge!
This half-term holiday is a perfect opportunity to read a great book, whether it is an old favourite, or a new book. We are holding an Extreme Reading Challenge. Take a photo of you reading in an unusual or surprising place. Maybe you like to read on holiday, or in a secret hideaway! Please make sure it is a safe place and do not put yourself in any danger for this challenge. Mrs Williams will be giving prizes for the best photos so please send them in!
Sammy Project
The first collection of bags of clothing was such a great success that we are having a second collection date.
How It Works:
Collect a bag from the main office
Monday 24th February – Please bring your filled bags back to school.
For every kilogram of clothing collected, we will receive 55p, with 35p per kilogram being donated to Leukaemia & Myeloma Research UK. The payment will be transferred to the school within three working days after the clothes are weighed, and we’ll also receive a certificate recognising our contribution to the charity!
What Can Be Donated?
Adult and children’s clothing and shoes
Perfumes and unopened cosmetics
Unwanted gifts and new toys
What Can’t Be Donated?
Unfortunately, branded school uniforms (anything with "Co-op Academy" or "New Islington Free School" logos) cannot be accepted. However, plain white polo shirts and school shirts are absolutely fine. (Come on, admit it—there's probably still an old polo hiding at the back of the wardrobe!
)
Let’s clear out those cupboards, support a great cause, and raise funds for our school at the same time!
NSPCC Number Day
Thank you for joining in with our Number Day last Friday. It was wonderful to see everyone wearing numbers and we saw some very creative costumes! We raised almost £100 for the NSPCC thanks to your kind donations.
Year 2 made a flower garden and focused on their 2x tables in their number day activities.
Mrs Williams Book Recommendation
Each week, Mrs Williams (and maybe some other staff) will suggest a good book to read.
Shadowsmith by Ross MacKenzie |
This is a firm favourite of mine. Ross Mackenzie is one of my favourite children’s authors and this book is definitely a corker! It twists and turns between darkness and light, and is jam packed full of suspense, mystery and intrigue. It is the story of a 12 year old boy, Kirby. Kirby meets a mysterious girl called Amelia Pigeon who warns him that he is in grave danger. However, Amelia is no ordinary 12 year old girl. She needs Kirby’s help to stop an ancient evil and together they embark on an adventure battling sinister forces. For ages 10 and above |
Forest School Dates
It is essential that children have the right clothing and footwear, especially this time of year (we will go out in all weathers, except in extreme conditions (heavy wind and severe rain). Children must have appropriate clothing and warm shoes.

REWARDS
Improving attendance is everyone’s business. The barriers to accessing education are wide and complex, both within and beyond the school gates, and are often specific to individual pupils and families. At Co-op Academy New Islington, we will do all we can to support your family and ensure our academy is safe, calm and a supportive environment for your child. Let’s celebrate everyone’s success together.
Miss Nixon is very proud to give out 64 certificates for 100% attendance this half-term and some children have earned a certificate for improved attendance. Well done!
How can I improve my children’s attendance?
Follow NHS advice for any mild illnesses.
Promote good hand hygiene with your children.
Liaise with the Early Help team who will support you as a family.
Speaking to your child’s teacher as a collaborative approach is essential
