Black History Month: celebrate through books
Each year group will focus their guided reading studies on a book based on a notable black historical figure or culture. The books have been carefully chosen to link in with the curriculum.
EYFS - 'Young, Gifted and Black' by Jamia Wilson and Andrea Pippins - lovely stories to share
Year 1 - 'I am Mansa Musa: King of Kings' by Amina Phelps. This links to their unit of work on Kings and Queens.
Year 2 - 'Keep On! The Story of Matthew Henson, Co-Discoverer of the North Pole' by Deborah Hopkinson. This links to their unit of work on Famous Explorers.
eYear 3 - 'The Kingdoms of Kush and Aksum' by Baby Professor. This creates a point of contract to the unit of work focussing on the Stone Age.
Year 4 - 'Empire's End: A Roman Story' by Leila Rasheed. This links to the unit of work on the Romans.
Year 5 - 'Diary of an Edo Princess' by Fidelia Nimmons and 'The Kingdom of Benin' by Philip Steele, both linking to the unit of work on Benin.
Year 6 - 'The Story of Britain's Black Airmen' by K. N. Chimbiri which links to their World War Two unit of work.
