What is bullying?

Bullying is behaviour which, over time, hurts or causes distress by taking unfair advantage of another person in some way. Bullying makes the victim feel uncomfortable or threatened. It is always unacceptable and will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

Bullying can take many forms, including actions, words, or cyber-bullying via text messages, social media or gaming. Not all bullying is deliberate or intended to hurt, but all forms of bullying are equally unacceptable.

Anti-bullying culture

Everyone will uphold the school’s values by reporting incidents of bullying whenever we witness or hear of them. Complaints of bullying will always be taken seriously, and will be dealt with quickly and effectively.

At Co-op Academy New Islington we respect everybody, wherever they come from or whatever their background. We do not accept bad words and behaviour towards someone just because of who they are. We behave positively towards people who are disabled, and towards people from different parts of the world and who speak other languages. We are also positive towards both sexes and those with different sexual orientations.

We talk about bullying quite often. This is not because it happens often, but because none of us want it to happen at all! We will therefore continue to talk about it regularly: in your class, in lessons, in assemblies and so on.

Dealing with bullying

There is a solution to nearly every problem of bullying. You must always tell your class teacher (or another responsible adult) if you are being bullied. You will receive support and advice, and in most cases the problem can be dealt with quickly and effectively.

A bully who does not respond appropriately to advice will face further action by the school.
